Interaction Between Grounding Systems and Nearby Lightning for the Calculation of Overvoltages in Overhead Distribution Lines

Experimental results obtained in 2003 at the International Center for Lightning Research and Testing (ICLRT) in Florida have shown that significant currents were coupled with an overhead experimental line through its grounding system by nearby rocket-triggered lightning.
The paper first proposes a conductive coupling model between the lightning current injected into the soil and the nearby line grounding system, then presents the incorporation of such a model into the LIOV-EMTP computer code. The paper finally presents an experimental validation of the proposed models by making reference to results obtained during the above-mentioned triggered-lightning campaign.

Protection Systems Against Lightning-Originated Overvoltages in Resonant Grounded Power Distribution Systems

The paper aims at illustrating the effectiveness of the presence of a surge arrester or spark gap and their protective zone by means of simulations obtained with a computer code for the calculation of lightning induced voltages that takes also into account the steady-state voltage. The results of a statistical analysis for a single multiconductor line are eventually presented and discussed.

SITL and HLA Co-simulation Platforms

Due to the necessity of developing analysis tools in the integrated ICT and power system domain, this paper describes and compares the architecture and configuration of two different ITC-power system ... see moreco-simulation approaches called SITL (System in the Loop) and HLA (High Level Architecture) Co-simulation platforms. Both platforms make use of the communication network simulator OPNET (Optimum Network Performance). As indicated by the names, the former operates in real time, in order to perform SITL simulations, whilst the latter is based on the HLA interface between OPNET and the power network simulation environment EMTP-rv (Electromagnetic Transient Program). We provide several details on their implementation and present their features by means of the results obtained for two test cases. The paper aims at clarifying the type of analysis that can be effectively carried out by using the two different platforms.

The case shows the application of black-box arc modeling in the study of kilometric-line fault capability of a 420 kV circuit-breaker. By zooming on the arc current and voltage near current-zero, post-arc current and initial TRV may be visualized in both cases of clearing and thermal failure.

Description:
This is a nice video about the switching of a shunt reactor (most probably 500 kV) with a Circuit-Switcher.
>A circuit-switcher is a SF6 load-break swith with no fault current breaking cap... see moreability. The load current, in this case around 150 A, is normally interrupted first by the 2 interrupters and then the disconnect will open to isolate the reactor.
What happened in this video:
1 - During the opening, an external flashover occurs on one of the chamber most probably because of the contamination;
2 - The other chamber can not withstand the whole voltage and reignites internally;
3 - The external flashover vanishes because an arc is established inside;
4 - The disconnect opens on the full load current;
5 - The arc burns freely in the air for some 10 seconds until it is self-extinguished or eliminated by a circuit-breaker operation.
