Workshop EMTP®

Course objectives

The objective of this course is to give to beginner participants a good first hands-on experience on EMTP® and an overview of the EMTP® capabilities. The course is based on the usage of EMTP® for demonstrating concepts and teaching through practical problem cases.


Training structure 

The duration of the training is 2 days.
The training starts at 9 am and ends at 5 pm every day. 
The training is presented in English.


Intended audience 

They could be users of the software but also people who would like to discover how useful simulation can be for them.

Computer and temporary EMTP® license

Each participant will have to bring a personal computer. EMTP® temporary licenses will be provided for the duration of the course.

  • Introduction to the graphical user interface EMTPWorks (part II)

    • Subcircuit creation and hierarchical designs

    • Multi-page designs

    • Basic models

    • Pratical exercises

    • Load-flow simulation

    • Steady-state solution

    • Time domain analysis 

    • Frequency scan

  • Introduction to ScopeView

    • Presentation

Day 2

  • Part I: Simulation of electromagnetic transient in power system with EMTP®

    • Introduction 

    • Transient recovery voltage (TRV) calculation

    • Temporary overvoltage (TOV) calculation

    • Switching OverVoltage (SOV) calculation

    • Absorption energy of series capacitors protected by varistors 

    • Circuit breaker parallel resistor

    • Lightning overvoltage

  • Part II: Renewable energy integration into grid with EMTP®
