Training on insulation coordination analysis

Training objectives

The objective of this training is to get familiar with the usage of EMT-type software and the study of power-system transients. How to model power-systems, what scenarios to run and how to interpret and verify results are as many questions that will be addressed. The software EMTP® is used for demonstrating concepts and teaching through practical cases. Prior experience with EMTP® is not required.


Training structure 

The duration of the training is 3 days (2 days basic and 1 day advanced). 
The training starts at 10 am and ends at 6 pm every day. Lunch breaks are from noon to 1.30 pm.
The training is presented in English.


Computer and temporary EMTP® license

Each participant will have to bring a personal computer. EMTP® temporary licenses will be provided for the duration of the course.

Day 2: Introduction to EMTP® models and application

  • Transformer

    • Transformer energization

  • Line and cable

    • Line energization analysis

  • Rotating machines

    • Synchronous generator

    • Exciter & Governor modelling IEEE 421.5-2005

    • Induction motor starting analysis

  • Relay models

  • Renewable energy system

  • Practical examples


Day 3: Insulation Coordination studies

  • Switching Transients

    • Statistical analysis

    • Switching cases

    • Selection of BSL based on IEC 60071-1

  • Lightning Transients

    • Modelling of system

    • Study of Back flash over analysis

    • Study of shielding failure analysis

    • Selection of BIL based o IEC 60071-1

In case of cancellation three weeks or more before the beginning of the training, the participants will not be charged.
In case of cancellation less than three weeks before the beginning of the training, PWSIM will charge the participant 50% of the training fees.
